Paxil

First approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1992, Paxil is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant medication that is generically known as paroxetine. It may also be sold under the brand names Aropax or Seroxat. Paxil is produced and marketed by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and works by balancing levels of serotonin in order to treat a number of mood disorders.

Paxil is typically prescribed for the treatments of depression, anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and panic disorder.

Paxil Side Effects

Paxil has been reported to cause a number of severe side effects, including mania, suicidal thoughts or behaviors, and withdrawal syndrome. Paxil has also been reported to cause sexual dysfunction, high blood pressure, and weight gain.

Paxil Birth Defects

In addition to placing patients at risk of developing potentially life-threatening health complications, Paxil has also been found to put the lives of unborn babies at risk due to birth defects. When unborn infants are exposed to Paxil in their third trimester, they have a significant risk of being born with heart defects (ventral septal defect or atrial septal defect). Another serious risk that pregnant women face when taking Paxil is that of experiencing a spontaneous loss of pregnancy.

Paxil Lawyers

Those injured as a result of taking Paxil may have a strong legal claim against GSK, and they are encouraged to start a Paxil defective drug lawsuit. Paxil lawyers are skilled at aggressively litigating for victims’ rights to help them build and present the strongest possible Paxil lawsuit.

Paxil Lawsuits, Mass Tort Programs, and Settlements

GSK settles most Paxil lawsuits before they ever make it to trial. Paxil settlements include compensation for medical bills, permanent disabilities, diminished quality of life, pain, and suffering. It will be more beneficial for some injured Paxil patients to file an individual Paxil lawsuit, but others will benefit from joining a mass tort program to secure the maximum possible settlement from GSK.
