DePuy Hip Implants

Produced by DePuy Orthopedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, the DePuy hip implant is a medical device surgically implanted in patients during a hip replacement used to improve mobility. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved the DePuy hip implant device in 2005 and gave DePuy Orthopedics permission to start marketing and distributing the device without conducting clinical trials. To date, approximately 93,000 people worldwide have received either the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System or the ASR Hip Resurfacing System (a device that preserves more of the patient’s bone).

DePuy Hip Injury

Tragically, about 1 in every 8 patients who received a DePuy hip implant experience failure of their device and some serious hip injury within the first 5 years. While the device may loosen or become misaligned and cause severe pain, it may also release a dangerous amount of metal ions in the blood stream, dislocate the hip joint, fracture the bone, or cause serious infection. Other severe injuries associated with defective DePuy hip implants include neuropathy, damage to the muscle tissue, and necrosis (death of the body’s tissues and cells).

DePuy Hip Recall

In August 2010, DePuy Orthopedics issued a voluntary recall of both of its ASR hip implants due to high failure rates. Since 2008, the FDA reports that it has received more than 400 patient reports regarding DePuy hip injuries.

DePuy Hip Revision Surgery

Although not all DePuy hip implant patients will need to undergo surgery to have the device removed, for those who do, the associated hip revision surgery is highly invasive, expensive, and has a lengthy and difficult recovery.
