Zicam Side Effects

Produced by Matrixx Initiatives, Inc., Zicam is a homeopathic, over-the-counter (OTC), cold remedy that is intended to reduce the severity and duration of cold symptoms. Zicam is available as a tablet or nasal spray, and it works by administering a zinc-based compound to the throat and nasal passages. In addition to treating colds, Zicam is also indicated for treatment of hay fever, sinus infections, and allergy attacks.

More than 100 patients have reported to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that they have developed serious Zicam side effects. Nearly a decade after such reports began arising, in June 2009, the FDA announced that it was recalling the following Zicam products:

  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs
  • Zicam Kids’ Size

This Zicam FDA warning also alerted the public that they should take precaution when using other Zicam products until their potential risks have been more fully and formally assessed.

Types of Zicam Side Effects: Zicam Smell and Taste Problems

The most severe side effect associated with use of Zicam Cold Remedy is the loss of smell, anosmia. While the loss of smell associated with Zicam can be limited to the inability to detect certain odors, such as coffee, anosmia can effect the ability to smell any odor. Given the strong connection between the sense of smell, taste, and memory, losing the ability to smell can uniquely deteriorate a person’s quality of life.

To combat anosmia, individuals may have to make changes to their diet, learn new techniques or methods for sensing the presence of toxic fumes, and undergo therapy to treat the grief associated with this disability.

Compensation for Zicam Side Effects

The FDA is currently conducting its own studies to evaluate the risks associated with the use of Zicam medications that are still available. The risks associated with recalled Zicam products are currently known, and they have already significantly impaired the quality of life for many individuals. Those who have been diagnosed with anosmia and who have a history of using Zicam Cold Remedy medications will likely have a strong legal claim against Matrixx Initiatives, Inc. Victims of Zicam may also be entitled to a sizable settlement for their injuries and losses. Injured parties are welcome to learn more about their legal rights and entitlements by attending a complimentary initial consultation with an experienced products liability lawyer.
