Denture Creams with Zinc

Denture creams with zinc still remain on the market even though recent scientific studies show that these products can cause serious health complications. Those who use or have used denture creams with zinc are at risk of being exposed to excessive amounts of zinc, which, in turn, can result in:

  • blood disorders, such as anemia
  • copper deficiency, characterized by skin problems, general inflammation, hallucinations and/or depression
  • myelopathy, a spinal cord disease affecting the blood vessels and surrounding tissue
  • neuropathy, nerve damage that may cause pain, loss of sensation, tingling, and/or burning
  • zinc poisoning.

Denture Creams and Zinc Poisoning

Of the dozens of denture creams available, two of the most popular brands “ Super PoliGrip® (made by GlaxoSmithKline [GSK]) and Fixodent® (made by Proctor & Gamble [P&G]) “ contain unsafe amounts of zinc. GSK recently removed zinc from the PoliGrip® formula, but P&G continues to market Fixodent® with zinc. The specific brands of these zinc denture creams include:

  • Fixodent Denture Original Adhesive Cream
  • Fixodent Complete Denture Adhesive Cream
  • Super PoliGrip Ultra Fresh
  • Super PoliGrip Extra Care Denture Cream
  • Super PoliGrip Denture Adhesive Cream
  • Super PoliGrip Comfort Seal Denture Cream
  • Super PoliGrip Denture Adhesive Smooth Cream

While GSK pulled Super PoliGrip with zinc from the market in February 2010 and subsequently re-marketed the Super PoliGrip brand without zinc, P&G continues to manufacture and distribute the Fixodent brand with zinc. The only saftey precaution taken by P&G is through an added warning on the product’s packaging (and the corporate website) stating that users should apply zinc denture creams only once per day and in very small amounts.

Denture Creams and Zinc Poisoning Lawsuits

Consumers who have a history of using zinc denture creams and believe they suffered side effects may have a case against GSK or P&G. Although GSK and P&G have settled a handful of denture cream zinc poisoning lawsuits to date, many more have been filed (and are continuing to be filed) as public awareness regarding these dangerous products continues to grow.
